The properties of copper tailings, a fine-grained residue waste produced from beneficiation of copper ore, and their effects on the properties of bituminous mix were studied by Oluwasola et al. (2014, 2015). The copper tailings were used at 20% content as a fine granite replacement for fraction size smaller than 1.18 mm.
The fraction of tailings to ore can range from 90–98% for some copper ores to 20–50% of the other (less valuable) minerals. The rejected minerals and rocks liberated through mining and processing have the potential to damage the environment by releasing toxic metals (arsenic and mercury being two major culprits), by acid drainage (usually by microbial action on sulfide ores), or by damaging aquatic wildlife that rely on clear water (vs suspensions).
In 2014, a tailings dam at the Mount Polley copper and gold mine in British Columbia failed as a result of an unstable foundation, sending 24 million cubic metres of slurry into the surrounding waterways. A year later, the Samarco mine’s tailings dam failed as a result of seismic activity combined with structural defects and other issues.

a b s t r a c t As ore grades fall, the amount of tailings production for the same copper production is expected to rise. Flotation recovery of copper sulfide from the El Teniente plant has deteriorated in recent years, in this regard ultrasound treatment of tailings for enhanced copper recovery was evaluated in laboratory experiments.
A process for the recovery of copper, molybdenum, gold and elemental sulfur in tailings from hydrometallurgical processing of copper sulfide ores, the process comprising concentrating the tailings containing elemental sulfur and copper, gold and molybdenum to a small bulk volume by froth flotation to reject barren gangue including jarosite, if present, and other impurities,
Water contaminated by the Mining industry is also referred to as Tailings. Tailings contain waste from the extraction processes such as equipment wash water, and from the refining process, often discharged in the form of slurry, which is a mix of fine gangue particles, chemicals and water, to large retention facilities called Tailing Dam or Tailing Ponds.
Tailings are finely ground rocks and other mineral waste as a result of mineral processing. Due to the way minerals are processed, tailings can contain concentrations of processing chemicals. This can make mine tailings an environmental concern,
Most copper ores contain only a small percentage of copper metal bound up within valuable ore minerals, with the remainder of the ore being unwanted rock or gangue minerals, typically silicate mineralsor oxide minerals for which there is often no value. In some cases, tailings have been retreated to recover lost value as the technology for recovering copper has improved. The average grade of copper ores in the 21st century is below 0.6% copper, with a proportion of eco
Copper processing is a complicated process that begins with mining of the ore (less than 1% copper) and ends with sheets of 99.99% pure copper called cathodes, which will ultimately be made into products for everyday use.The most common types of ore, copper oxide and copper sulfide, undergo two different processes, hydrometallurgy and pyrometallurgy, respectively,

The present study focused on application of flotation tailings as a neutralizing agent for acidic effluents. Laboratory experiments followed by computer simulation of the industrial process showed that 99% of the acid can be neutralized with flotation tailings in a series of six reactors resulting in the final copper concentration of 1.55 gL -1 .
Copper sulfides inside the tailings might have been oxidized and ultrasound treatment may have removed the oxidized layer from the particles surfaces as well as helping the desliming. This would mean an improvement in the overall recovery of the system before sending the tailings to their final deposition.

The Project will target the near-term production of copper concentrate through a dedicated newly constructed copper concentrating facility for which Jubilee has completed the design for the construction at a targeted Brownfield site adjacent to the tailings. The Processing Facility will be commissioned in two phases with the first copper

The comprehensive recovery rate of copper and gold (relative to the original ore) is increased by 2.04% and 1.85% respectively. Cyclone assist tailings filling. The tailings filling is to dewater the tailings into tailings sand with a concentration of about 70%, and then re-inject into the goaf mine through special treatment.
The plant will treat ~15,000 t/day of a 60:40 blend of current flotation tailings and the mine’s historic tailings. The tailings also contain a significant amount of cyanide-soluble copper, and the economic viability of the project is strengthened by recovering most of the copper and cyanide associated with this process.

Metso Tailings Management brings a comprehensive approach by combining 3 practices: Dewatering the tailings, handling them with dry stacking, and reprocessing new and existing ones. We also look to elevate the approach to reduce social hazards and associated risks, which will improve the overall image of the mining industry.

The invention is directed towards methods and compositions for improving the processing of mineral tailings. The method involves diverting a side stream from the main line of a tailings process flow. Into this side stream an additive such as a neat polymer without dilution is added and mixed and is then returned into the main line. By doing this only a portion of the overall tailings

“In the treatment of complex ores, such as those carrying lead, zinc and iron, and in copper ores containing both sulphides and oxides of this mineral, our present methods of recovery are still in embryo, and such tailings must inevitably carry an appreciable portion of the original contents of the ore, in the complex zinc, lead and iron ores
